On 14–15 November 2024, the NIP Days were held at the University of Groningen.
14 November: Study Day
A translation workshop was held in memory of Kees Verheul, a renowned translator and Slavist who taught at the University of Groningen. The workshop featured:
Interviews with two prominent translators
A presentation by the Dutch Foundation for Literature
A masterclass on literary translation led by Gretske de Haan, a UGR alumna
Students from Anthropology, Philosophy, and Russian Studies were then invited to attend a presentation by Radboud University’s Think Tank, which in 2023 conducted research on the history of Russian migration in the Netherlands and Europe.
The day concluded with a screening of Ella Manzheeva’s film The Gulls, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
15 November: Career Orientation Day
The day began with Meet & Ask sessions for prospective students (high schoolers studying Russian as an elective), followed by:
Presentations by UGR students on their research topics
A discussion with RUG NIP alumni
Later, an NIP documentary on Dutch presence in Northern Russia and ties with the Murmansk region was screened, followed by an informal discussion over drinks.
This event, organized by the Russian and Slavic Studies program at the University of Amsterdam in collaboration with the Dutch Institute in Saint Petersburg, brought together students and interested participants.

A panel discussion with NIP alumni (Eline Helmer, Boris Staal, Jacob Boon)
A screening of an NIP documentary about Dutch presence in Russia
13 December 2023
Young researchers and students in Slavic Studies, Russian Studies, and related humanities disciplines from Dutch universities explored cross-cultural connections between East and West, presenting their work.
22 April 2023
This lecture, titled Neither graveyard, no country, examined the fates of 20th-century Russian writers — including Anna Akhmatova (who refused to live under a foreign sky) and Joseph Brodsky (who wished not to be buried in foreign soil).
The event featured a lecture and discussion led by Dr. Peter van Nunen.
