VU Amsterdam Russian Studies Day: Challenges and Bridges

Nu fysieke academische uitwisseling met Rusland beperkt is, richt het Nederlands Instituut in Sint-Petersburg (NIP) zich op online activiteiten en evenementen in Nederland. Op deze manier blijft het NIP Russian studies-programma's ondersteunen en fungeert het als een academische en culturele brug.
Op 21 mei 2026 vindt aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam de VU Amsterdam Russian Studies Day: Challenges and Bridges plaats. Het evenement wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het NIP.
Deze dag brengt studenten, onderzoekers, docenten en beleidsmakers samen om stil te staan bij de huidige situatie en de toekomst van Russian Studies in Nederland.
Programma
13:00–14:00 Besloten brainstormsessie (op uitnodiging)
Werkbijeenkomst met vertegenwoordigers van International Offices, docenten, scriptiebegeleiders en andere partners.
Tijdens deze sessie presenteert dr. Olga Ovechkina (NIP) de huidige mogelijkheden en institutionele behoeften binnen Russian Studies.
14:30–16:45 Student & Scholar Meet-Up
Open academische sessie over onderwijs, onderzoek en loopbaanmogelijkheden binnen Russian Studies.
14:45–15:00 Opening en welkom
15:00–15:30 Geschiedenis van russistiek en neerlandistiek
Dr. Jaap Grave (VU) en Katja Vekshina (NIP) presenteren de bundel Bruggenbouwers, over de ontwikkeling van Russistiek in Nederland en Neerlandistiek in Rusland.
15:30–16:00 Sociale geschiedenis en academische ervaring
Dr. Gijs Kessler (IISG) reflecteert op zijn onderzoekservaring in Rusland en bredere benaderingen binnen de sociale geschiedenis.
16:00–16:15 Koffiepauze
16:15–16:45 Lopend onderzoek
Presentaties van de VU-studenten over hun actuele onderzoek binnen Russian Studies.

17:30–18:30 Publieksprogramma: Music Bridge concert
Concert in het kader van het project Music Bridge: From the Neva to the Amstel, waarin Russische en Nederlandse musici samen optreden.
Het programma bestaat uit originele vocale en instrumentale composities in een hedendaagse jazzstijl, waarin verschillende muzikale tradities samenkomen.

As visits from Dutch students and researchers to Russia are currently not possible, the Dutch Institute in Saint Petersburg (NIP) has shifted its focus to online activities and events in the Netherlands. In this way, the NIP continues to support Russian Studies programs and serves as an academic and cultural bridge.
On May 21, 2026, the VU Amsterdam Russian Studies Day: Challenges and Bridges will take place at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The event is organized in collaboration with the NIP.
The day will bring together students, researchers, faculty, and policymakers to reflect on the current state and future of Russian Studies in the Netherlands.

Working session with representatives of International Offices, faculty members, thesis supervisors, and other partners.
